	Vertical Browser Security Updates

This is a specialized (vertical browser) website that displays web pages in frames. Due to the risks of domain masking, the real URLs of some sites you visit might not necessarily appear in the address bar of even some well-known browsers. But as pages are being opened, their locations will be identified in the Status Bar at the bottom of the browser window. Before you make online purchases or share secure information over the Internet please be sure to follow these three steps:

Click on the 'new' check box next to the address bar and open the web page you want to visit in a new browser window.

The URL in your new browser's address bar should begin with https:// The letter 's' after 'http' indicates that this is a secure web site.

You should have a padlock icon visible in your new browser window. Double click the padlock to verify that the security certificate is issued to the web site you are currently viewing.

Never click a link in an e-mail, an e-book, or a third-party site to go to any of your financial accounts.
Always open and use a new instance of your default browser before visiting a secure web site.

Be careful to avoid submitting to counterfeit sites run by spooking, pharming, or phishing scams (cross-site scripting, user control attacks, and cloaked page redirection). Some browsers may hand over control of an exposed computer to an attacker if a specially made web page is visited.

Criminals typically try to trick people into visiting such sites by sending out spam or phishing e-mail messages. Sometimes the sites of these messages contain links to closely look like bank web sites. Others look harmless but behind the scenes they are installing backdoor spyware that malicious hackers can remotely command.

Firewall - A firewall guards the ports to your computer and allows only the traffic you approve of. It offers a basic protection solution for web surfers (with real-time Internet traffic information) and personal computer network security against Internet attacks.

The following security enhancements are also recommended:

Microsoft Windows Wireless Network - There are certain kinds of local links, such as wireless LANs, that provide no physical security. Because of the existence of these links it would be very unwise for an implementer to assume that when a device is communicating only on the local link it can dispense with normal security precautions. Failure to implement appropriate security measures could expose users to considerable risks. -The Internet Society

If you are running any kind of network firewall - including the firewall that comes built in to Windows - you won't have to worry about strangers connecting to your laptop.
Many laptops have a button to push that disables the built-in wireless feature until you hit that button again. Turning off the wireless connection when you are not using it also prevents this from being a problem.
Change the setting on the computer's wireless card to connect only to 'infrastructure networks' - real wireless access points that actually allow you to surf the Web. To do this, go to ''Network Connections,' and then right click on the entry labeled 'wireless network connection' and select 'Properties' from the drop down menu. Then click on the 'Wireless Networks' tab, and then on the 'Advanced' tab at the bottom of that window. A box should pop up that gives you three buttons to choose from: Select the one next to 'Access point (infrastructure) networks only.'

Microsoft Security Updates - Third-party script errors may occur occasionally. Common error messages are due to faulty embedded banner or ad trackers that are routinely replaced. To report a third-party script error please contact the webmaster of that site. An out of date security patch or Hotfix may also cause some Windows browsers to crash, depending on the version. Please install the most recent Microsoft security patches for your Windows operating system.
